Waders

just a note to say that John O' Gaunts and Beaverdyke Reservoirs have very low water levels at the moment and will be well worth a look over the next couple of months for passage waders.

This is one of BOG's best wader reservoirs and a wide selection of waders has been noted there in the past. Some may remember the Long Billed Dowitcher many moons ago!

For those interested in dragonflies the newly created pools at Timble Ings are providing a nice variety inc Black Darter, Emperor, Banded Demoiselle, common darter, Brown and Southern Hawker, Four spotted chaser and 25+ Broad bodied Chasers.

there are some pools near the old pub as you walk in from the Anchor Farm end and a larger complex of pools on the south side stretching right out to the moorland edge. Any sightings would be greatly recieved.

this is a short note on one local birders recent activities

We started atBarden and walked to the Upper Res and came back tothe car via the Lower Res. Quite interesting it was. Stonechats : One pair with two juveniles below theUpper Res, another pair feeding and seen on thebracken above the Lower Res. A female was also nea rth epath along the top of the Lower Res. Whinchat : A singing male near the inlet at the top ofthe Lower Res and a pair by the track around the top of the Lower Res close to where the lone feamle Stonechat was. There was also a female Wheatear. We could not decide what it was doing at this stage, it didn't seem to be breeding, but we couldn't be sure. We noted two adult Red Grouse and five young birdsjust nice and plump for the 12th! Along Trough Lane we saw another pair of Stonechats! I've now seen six pairs of Stonechats and two females in the last week and three pairs of Whinchats! Today at Glovershaw (18th) there were a good few post-breeding parties of Reed Bunting, Willow Warbler, Meadow Pipit, Dunnock on the bracken. A juvenile Stonechat was amongst them and I saw the pair ofYellowhammers that have taken up residence at the top of the Glen Road.

Note on sensitive species

this is a short note to clarify why certain records are posted under the title "undisclosed site". The site name is not mentioned where the safety or breeding success of the birds could be compromised due to it being publicised. This could be in the form of disturbance, persecution or egg collecting and thus sightings of certain species will not be published. This is not to be awkward but simply to put the birds welfare first. Some of these species are excluded from the website at the request of organisations such as the RSPB and English Nature.

We would still welcome all sightings to be submitted and more importantly would encourage all birders to submit their records to the BOG recorder as sending them to be included on the website is completely seperate from the BOG records database/annual reports.

Below is a list of species where the site name will remain confidential. We hope this carifies the matter and that it does not cause any inconevience and that birders appreciate the need for this discretion

All Schedule 1 species present on breeding territory and/or present in the breeding season. A list of all of these can be found on www.rbbp.org.uk/specieslists.html. Note this includes LRP, Kingfisher and Black Redstart

All Raptor and Owl species on breeding territory and/or present in the breeding season. There is some overlap here with the previous section.

All Hen Harrier and Goshawk records.

All Nightjar sites.

All sites which are private and/or sensitive where access arrangements for birders may be compromised.
