A Dreadful Sight!

At the railway bridge, just upriver from Hirst Wood today (Monday), the body of a Grey Heron was dangling from a tree. The bird had got caught in fishing line and its shoulder and head was surfing on the surface of the river. The condition of the head would suggest the bird died some time ago. I could not reach the body as the line came from two different branches on a tree overhanging the river. A very sorry spectacle.

Shipley Glen
A pleasant walk on a rare sunny morning produced only a limited number of birds, these included eight Jays, six of which were prominent in the Glen and another two made what has become a daily visit to an adjoining garden. Nuthatches were very active in three different places, a Grey Wagtail was feeding on the beck but the big surprise was the total absence of Herons. At this time of year, with the river swollen after heavy rains, there are likely to be roosting birds in two or three locations.

A very quiet morning on the moor so attention switched to the hedgerow at the bottom of the 'horse-field' along the Glen Road. Here there was a hive of activity.  A big flock of Greenfinch attracted my attention, but there were many other species, including a Spotted Flycatcher, a Whitethroat, a female Blackcap, a few fresh-looking Willow Warblers and a pair of Bullfinch.  The adjacent bracken seemed alive with families of Reed Buntings.  A downy looking Stonechat hopped along the wall and two more adult looking birds were seen near Glovershaw Lane.

Glovershaw and Shipley Glen
The interesting weekend continued with another good passage of migrants and post-breeding flocks of passerines.  In a hedgerow alongside the 'horse-field' a group of 20 or more Willow Warblers passed along before diving for cover into ferns. A Whitethroat attended to a couple of juveniles and a female Redstart flicked its tail and fled amongst the cover. Further along at Golcar, three Wheatear and two Whinchats were feeding and the moorland fringes were alive with gathering Meadow Pipits. At Brackenhall, Tawny Owls, disturbed by Crows, could be heard making contact whilst a Green Woodpecker flew over the Glen.

Shipley Glen and Glovershaw,
It was very soggy underfoot after yet another downpour.  However, the birding was interesting.  A Green Woodpecker was disturbed on the Glen and a family of six Jays moved through the tallest trees. Along the Glen Road a pair of Stonechats were feeding three of their brood, Reed Buntings and Dunnocks were similarly engaged.   A fresh-looking Whinchat appeared momentarily and two Wheatears were feeding in the newly cut meadow.  A young Whitethroat showed briefly at Birch Close Lane where a pair of Stock Doves were moved on by marauding Jackdaws.  All the breeding birds seen were occupying the ferns which dominate much of the upland at each side of the Glen Road.  This clearly illustrates the value of these plants as a food source, a place of refuge and where the ecology can flourish.

Monday 20th August, 2012

Glovershaw, Baildon
On a bright, sunny afternoon, after heavy rain it was pleasing to see that a strong passage of birds is underway. Seven Wheatears were feeding amongst newly cut hay and two juvenile Whinchat flitted about on tall ferns.  A rather 'tatty-looking' male Stonechat sat on the wall where breeding has probably taken place and from the Weecher area could be heard the calls of a Buzzard as it soared with a juvenile. A Swallow 'mobbed' a hunting Kestrel and post-breeding parties of Meadow Pipits and Goldfinch were active.

Thursday 2nd August 2012

Glovershaw and Baildon Moor
A very pleasant morning, ideal for checking out breeding passerines. Meadow Pipits and Skylarks were feeding on the Golf Course and a male Reed Bunting carried a Meadow Brown butterfly to the nest. A male Linnet was trilling from the bracken and at Crook Farm a Whitethroat was frantically gathering food.  A flock of a dozen or so Swallows were skimming the grasses in their search for insects and high above 15 to 20 Swifts swept by.
