Stockbridge Reserve(members only) - Except for the sighting of House Martin, the current poor weather with NE winds, is delaying migrants at the reserve. By this weekend, Garden, Sedge & Whitethroat are normally recorded but are still awaited. Willow Warbler, Chiff-Chaff and Blackcap continued to sing despite the cold conditions. Swallows searched for any flies on the water.

Strid walk this morning produced 37 species in total including 2 male Pied Flycatchers and a brief glimpse of a male Redstart, also Common Sandpiper (pair), Mandarin (2), Dipper; plenty of Sand Martins but only one Swallow; Willow Warbler, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Chiffchaff, Green & Great Spotted Woodpeckers; Lapwing, Curlew, Oystercatcher, Mallards with ducklings, Goosander (pair); and most of the usual passerines present except for Long-tailed Tit…
No sign nor sound of Wood Warblers yet however…

In blustery conditions, three Wheatears (2 males and a female) flew into Birch Close and moments later a female Sparrowhawk swept over them whilst a small flock of 13 Golden Plovers fought with a strong wind.

On a wet and dismal afternoon there were 6 Wheatears (3 male and 3 female) at Birch Close Lane and a Red Kite flew by. There were only 15 Golden Plovers in their usual spot, but a couple of Green Woodpeckers were active in Shipley Glen.

West Yorkshire Ecology is again advertising for someone to help with the bird surveys of the South Pennines moorland fringe this summer.
Although the position is for a full-time position, they may be able to accommodate someone part-time (3 days a week), particularly if the person was ready to start early in April.

Hirst Wood - Treecreeper, Nuthatch, 2 Goldcrest, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Jay, Carrion Crow, 3 Mistle Thrush, 7 Blackbird, 8 Robin, 3 Wren, 12 Blue Tit, 2 Coal Tit, 4 Long-tailed Tit, 3 Wood Pigeon, Chaffinch.
River Aire (Hirst Wood - Saltaire):84 Mallard (56 male/28 female), 7 Goosander (3 male/4 female), 2 Grey Wagtail, 12 Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Greylag, Canada Goose, 2 Mute Swan, 2 Moorhen.
In field south of Coach Road:Lapwing, Stock Dove, 31 Wood Pigeon, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker heard calling in the area.

Hirst Wood, Shipley
A female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was calling loudly from trees along side the canal. It was in an area about half way along the wood. Earlier, a male bird was seen flying across the canal over the aqueduct.

Hirst Wood this morning - male Lesser-Spotted Woodpecker first heard calling and drumming, and then seen feeding and drumming. Also Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Jay, and plenty of Coal Tits.

On an excellent morning for birding, a female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was watched as it fed amongst the trees on the canal side of the wood. The bird was much closer to the Dowley Gap end, but kept to trees adjacent to the canal. It made frequent contact calls as it flew from tree to tree. Fred Drake saw and photographed a male bird on Tuesday in the same area (see the Members' Blog).

Shipley Glen,
On a mild, still day, there were four drumming Great Spotted Woodpeckers at a variety of locations and a Dipper around the nest site on the beck. Close by, 25 Redwing fed in the ploughed field, 15 Goldfinch found food in the hedgerows along with a pair of Bullfinch. A Song Thrush was in full voice, Jays, Great Tits, Mistle Thrush and Nuthatch were prominent.
