Early birds in song included a 'trilling' Nuthatch, three drumming Great Spotted Woodpeckers and seven Grey Herons roosting at Milnerfields - otherwise very quiet.

Stockbridge Reserve (members only) - 31 species recorded including - good views of Peregrine circling overhead , 7 Bullfinch, 30 Siskin with some males coming down to the willows in front of the hide to bathe, 3 Reed Bunting, Water Rail heard but not seen. Usual visit of Cormorant on river.

Dowley Gap - 30 to 40 Meadow Pipits, hunting Sparrowhawk, 3 Grey Wagtails plus a few Pied. 6 Lapwings in nearby fields. On the River Aire towards Cottingley Bridge, 5 Goosander, a Little Grebe. A few Fieldfare on by-pass verges in Ferncliffe Road area.

River Aire, Bingley -
7 Goosanders. Where the current slowed down, the river is showing signs of freezing.

St Ives -
30 Redpoll flock feeding on Alder near Racecourse Plantation. GSW, Jay, a few Fieldfare, Sparrowhawk, Redwing & 2 Nuthatch, one at the feeding station with also 5 Robins (& no fighting). GSW seen was pulling oak galls off the tree and flying to a branch to open each one up. This went on for some time. Presumably inside will be Gall Wasp larvae/ grubs.

Despite the seasonal dearth, visits and counts have continued. Until the vis season gets going again do keep visiting:

to keep up with what little is in the sky. It wont be long now until the pinks are flooding through again, oystercatchers are coming back inland and spring skylarks are going over.... if the cold continues and gets worse then there may even be more before that!
