Bittern seen this morning, it was on the island inside the moat grubbing around amongst the piles of wood. When disturbed it flew off into the frozen moat.

Walk along River Aire from Bingley to Shipley - never seen the river completely frozen on stretches at Myrtle Park, Hirst Wood & Shipley, with steam rising where the water was fast flowing. Birds recorded on the 4 mile walk - total of 17 Goosander, 4 Grey Heron, 3 Dipper, female Goldeneye, plus 5 Little Grebes which had congregated below the weir at Hirst Wood. No Kingfisher seen.

Scargill Res - ice free but with only Mallards & female Goldeneye.
John O'Gaunt & Beaverdyke Res - both ice bound.
On the east side of Beaverdyke - 3 Tree Sparrow & Marsh Tit in garden. Marsh was feeding on soft crab apples still hanging on tree.
By the side of a stream below the farm in the same area, 40 Lesser Redpoll bathing.

A large flock of over 100 Waxwings feeding on Rowan berries on trees in Gracechurch Street which is between Lumb Lane and White Abbey Road.

Esholt to Apperley Bridge via sewage works - Water Rail (one bird seen and at least one other heard), several Waxwings flew over, 2 Reed Bunting, 3 Teal, 2 Goosander, Sparrowhawk, flock of Redwing, Goldcrests, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Grey Heron.

Back on the frozen lake, a BHG flew in carrying a vole and swallowed it whole.

Not yet seen by me but there is a Great Grey Shrike in the Storiths area of wharfedale, near to the farm cafe, on the back road from the A59. It as been also seen flying towards the river from that road.
