Shipley Glen

Green Woodpeckers have again successfully bred in the Glen. A juvenile bird was seen near Brackenhall whilst an adult was calling from nearby. Another adult was similarly calling from about half a mile to the north in a part of Glen that is narrow and inaccessible . Near this point a family party of Jays were active with two juveniles being noticed. Another young Jay was seen behind the Old Glen House. During the walk two family groups of Nuthatches were also watched.

Friday 23rd July

Glovershaw, Baildon Moor

Breeding birds were prominent within the area with juvenile Meadow Pipits, Reed Bunting and a family party of Linnets along the Glen Road. Another, similar group of Linnets were feeding in the gorse at the end of Birch Close Lane where a Whitethroat was also seen. I'd seen another Whitethroat on the Glen Road and a family of Great Spotted Woodpeckers near Crook Farm and from the Glen there was a weak, but persistent call of a Green Woodpecker.

Glovershaw
An adult Cuckoo was seen feeding on caterpillars and flying across the bottom of Birch Close Lane. It perched on a variety of posts and rails and then dropped to the ground to scoop up its prey, on one occasion it was mobbed by a Swallow. Nearby, a male Reed Bunting was similarly engaged, taking a large green caterpillar to its nest. Another was singing from a wire on the Glen Road and a pair of Linnet were close-by and two more pairs noted in the vicinity of Birch Close. Two post-breeding flocks of Starlings were in the area, a Kestrel was hunting over the moor and three pairs of Swallow were around Golcar Farm.
