this is a short note on one local birders recent activities

We started atBarden and walked to the Upper Res and came back tothe car via the Lower Res. Quite interesting it was. Stonechats : One pair with two juveniles below theUpper Res, another pair feeding and seen on thebracken above the Lower Res. A female was also nea rth epath along the top of the Lower Res. Whinchat : A singing male near the inlet at the top ofthe Lower Res and a pair by the track around the top of the Lower Res close to where the lone feamle Stonechat was. There was also a female Wheatear. We could not decide what it was doing at this stage, it didn't seem to be breeding, but we couldn't be sure. We noted two adult Red Grouse and five young birdsjust nice and plump for the 12th! Along Trough Lane we saw another pair of Stonechats! I've now seen six pairs of Stonechats and two females in the last week and three pairs of Whinchats! Today at Glovershaw (18th) there were a good few post-breeding parties of Reed Bunting, Willow Warbler, Meadow Pipit, Dunnock on the bracken. A juvenile Stonechat was amongst them and I saw the pair ofYellowhammers that have taken up residence at the top of the Glen Road.
