Into the woods on a superb day for birding. I hoped to see the pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers that Keith Hillary saw on Sunday. They were seen at very close quarters on the driveway through Milnerfields. Despite by best efforts, there was no sign, although Nuthatch and Great Spotted were prominent. But where have all the Jays gone? It was pleasing to hear a Green Woodpecker calling from an area near Brackenhall where they successfully bred last year.

A flock of 40 or so Common Gulls was still in the vicinity, but otherwise it was rather quiet on such a brilliant, clear day.

A change in the month and a change in the weather to much more spring-like conditions. A skein of 70 Pink-footed Geese went over Baildon Moor at 10.40am. They came from the east and travelled towards the west. The good conditions had encouraged a couple of Skylarks into song, whilst 20 Lapwing had arrived on their breeding territory.
