In the fields by Golcar Farm, there were two Wheatears (a male and a female) and a feeding flock of 37 Golden Plovers. Eight Stock Dove were also near by taking advantage of recently manured ground and several Snipe were displaying, 'chunking' or in one case, sitting out on a field-post. Down in Shipley Glen a Green Woodpecker's call rang out.

What better than to be on the moorland fringes of Baildon Moor on such a very pleasant day as this. The numbers of Golden Plover had risen to 67 and about 12 pairs of Lapwing were now on territory. Two pairs of Curlew were feeding on the rough pasture and the air was filled with the sound of Skylark and the call of Snipe. No passerines as yet, just the promise of Wheatear, Stonechat and Whinchat in the next few weeks.

Into the woods on a superb day for birding. I hoped to see the pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers that Keith Hillary saw on Sunday. They were seen at very close quarters on the driveway through Milnerfields. Despite by best efforts, there was no sign, although Nuthatch and Great Spotted were prominent. But where have all the Jays gone? It was pleasing to hear a Green Woodpecker calling from an area near Brackenhall where they successfully bred last year.

Glovershaw,
A flock of 45 Golden Plover were feeding in the field behind Golcar Farm. This is a traditional place for these birds to assemble before they disperse in April. About 20 Lapwing were establishing their breeding territory, Skylarks were prominent on the moorland fringe, but more ominously 40 Graylags had settled in a field along Glovershaw Lane. A flock of 40 or so Common Gulls was still in the vicinity, but otherwise it was rather quiet on such a brilliant, clear day.
